BCI Asia estimates that 115 new hotels are currently under development in Indonesia. The company which tracks construction projects across Asia estimates the value of the current hotel projects being built in Indonesia at Rp. 3.4 trillion (US$326.5 million) covering an areas of 853,000 square metes (853 square kilometers). According to BCI, these projects are spread across 24 Indonesian provinces and 52 cities.

Bali Dominates

BCI reports that Bali continues to dominate as the site for new hotel projects, based on its popularity as a domestic and international tourist destination, with the Kuta and Nusa Dua area as the most popular sub-destinations for the construction of hotels, resorts, serviced apartments and luxury villas.

Cited as one of the "big project" underway in Bali, BCI points to the Griya Shanti Hotel and Apartment within Nusa Dua’s BTDC complex. That project managed by PT Megatika International covers 7 hectares and is comprised of a 6-storey (sic) apartment building in combination with a large hotel component.

Another project, Jumeirah Resort is being built in Bali is in the Sawangan area of Nusa Dua by PT Bali Nusra Intan in accordance with architectural plans from Wimberly, Allison, Tong and Goo of Honolulu. The Jumeirah Resort will cover 12.7 hectare with 188 hotel rooms, 16 penthouses and 30 lagoon villas.

Bali’s popular sub-district of Kuta will see the development of a new hotel on Jalan Kartika Plaza designed by Sonny Susanto Architects. The five-storey (sic) hotel project will cover 17,750 square meters.

This Kuta project joins the recently opened Outrigger O-CE-N Bali apartment hotel consisting of 144 units occupying 12,000 square meters.

Also mentioned by BCI as Bali developments is the Sin Ken Ken Beach Hotel & Residences comprised of 45 units built over 6 storey (sic) occupying 7,500 meters developed by PT Renda Mas Realty and designed by Greenwood Architects.

Following Bali as the second-most-popular location for new hotel and resort development is West Java where 15 projects are reportedly underway.
