The tradition of celebrating the third Thursday of November may be reserved for the American feast of Thanksgiving, but on a global scale it is also the day set aside for the world-wide release of this year’s crop of Beaujolais Nouveau - the light red wine from Gamay, served chilled just 6 to 8 weeks after its harvest.
An event that has acquired a fanfare that in many ways outperforms the wine – special flights are chartered, police escorts are laid on and even air drops arranged to rush the latest crop to every conceivable corner of the world. To meet this marketing hype and the resulting strong demand, around 50 million liters of Beaujolais Nouveau are shipped each year to destinations across France and around the world.
Also in Bali a dedicated circle of Beaujolais devotees gather to welcome and quaff this years crop. This year’s celebration will be held at the Sofitel Seminyak Bali on Friday, November 28, 2008 at 8 p.m. . Admission tickets of Rp. 350,000 (US$28.75) cover two glasses of Beaujolais Nouveau, a lavish traditional French buffet (i.e. gravlax salmon, lobster terrine, smoke duck magret, quiche, duck confit, leg of lamb) and a cabaret show reminiscent of an evening on the Moulin Rouge.
