High westerly winds caused sand shifts on Bali's popular Kuta beach temporarily closing Kuta's main beach-side road (Jalan Raya Kuta) during the first few days of the month of February 2010. The strong winds whipped up sand from the beach covering the two lane road with sand.
Further down the beach, in the Tuban area of South Kuta, waves playedg havoc in front of the Discovery Mall and Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel.
Quoted in Kompas.com, the Chairman of the Kuta Beach Security Team (Satgas Pantai Kuta), I Gusti Ngurah Tresna, said on February 1, 2010: "Now the winds are very strong. Since this morning we've seen the large stones forming breakwater in front of the Hotel Kartika Plaza crushed by the waves."
Borrowing truck from the Badung Parks Department, efforts were made to protect the beach by installing new stones to replace the six one-ton stones devastated by the huge waves.
A special government team dealing with erosion is now planning a strategy to reclaim lost beach front as soon as the current heavy waves subside.
