Garuda is preparing to once again become an international airline after a hiatus in which the national flag carrier shrunk to regional airline status.
Buoyant with the resumption of service to Europe with its Amsterdam flight in June 2010, the technical and maintenance director of the airline told the Jakarta Post that service will be extended to include Italy, London, Paris and Frankfurt starting in February 2011. These new flight services will be accommodated via the delivery of new Airbus A330-200 aircraft due for delivery at year's end 2010.
Garuda also expects to receive 24 new Boeing 737-800 jets this year which will replace and supplement their existing armada of 10 Boeing 737-400 aircraft. The new jets are part of an order book with Boeing for 40 new Boeing 737-800 planes.
