Born in his native Indonesia, but traveling to Europe as a teenager to pursue his musical education where he graduated summa cum laude from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Den Haag, Ananda Sukarlan is irrefutably one of the leading classical piano performers of the modern era.

The winner of numerous international prizes, Sukarlan now makes his home base in Spain. He has performed in many overseas festivals and with symphony orchestras and ensembles in Berlin and Rotterdam and with the great symphony orchestras of Spain, Paris and Wellington. The only Indonesian listed in the book "2000 Outstanding Musicians of the 20th Century" and "The International Who's Who in Music." His discography includes 14 CDs covering the complete piano works of Santiago Lanchares, David del Puerto, Jesus Rueda, Toru Takemitsu, Peter Sculthorpe, Amir Pasaribu, Trisutji Kamal, Theo Loevendie and original compostiions by Sukarlan.

His collaboration with prominent choreographer Chendra Panatan has resulted in works for ballet, performed both in Europe and Indonesia. His has also created a groundbreaking opera written for a single soprano voice, based on a monologue by Seno Gumira Ajidarma. In addition, he is currently composing a series of musical works written for disabled musicians, on a commission by Fundacion Musica Abierta of Spain.

International Reviews about Ananda Sukarlan

"Sukarlan's performance of, it must be said, extremely difficult music, from Spain and Scotland was unparalleled. His mastery of the piano allowed him to effortlessly cope with the most challenging rhythms alongside lilting, soothing melodies with ease. It made mainstream music seem almost tame in comparison." - Martin Lenon, Evening News, Scotland

"Sukarlan is recognized as one of the world's leading pianists and has been at the forefront of championing new piano music." - S. Creagh, Sydney Morning Herald

Ananda Sukarlan is a pianist of quite startling luminosity and vivacity, a keyboard colourist whose palette would surely glow with Debussy, Ravel and Messiaen if it were not on this occasion spattered with an array of composers from a different hemisphere. All of them were fortunate to have him as their exponent." - Conrad Wilson, The Herald, Scotland

"... I was taken aback by the freshness and vitality of the playing. Mr. Sukarlan's interpretation [of Tippett's First Sonata] gave it a strength and poetry that elevated it onto a new plane. Technically, his playing was impeccable and his tone-control and variety of colour quite admirable ." - Sir Michael Tippett , composer 1905 – 1998

" ... Ananda is one of the few excellent interpreters of my very difficult piano work 'Trepidus'. ... An exceptionally gifted pianist, he combines musicality with a very intelligent and sharp insight in both the music and the playing." - Louis Andriessen , composer
