A fast-spreading fire at the Puri Bali Indah Restaurant on Jalan Melasti, in Legian, Kuta on Thursday, August 12, 2010, destroyed the second-storey of the dining venue and sent diners running for safety,
Beritabali.com quotes an eyewitness to the blaze, Wayan Danika, as saying the fire started in a piping system on the second floor and spread rapidly. "In a few minutes the fire was huge," he said.
Four foreign tourists ran for their lives, escaping unscathed from the fire which destroyed the entire second floor of the restaurant.
3 fire trucks responded to the alarm, managing to save the ground floor and the nearby Legian Beach Hotel.
An employee of the restaurant said the fire started at a stove and spread to a grease-laden exhaust system system.
Fire fighters spent forty minutes bring the fire under control which also resulted in traffic jams along Kuta Beach.
