The provincial government of Bali is undertaking a survey of all travel agents in Bali in order to close illegal tour operators and introduce revamped rules for travel operators.
The head of the government travel service for Bali (Kadiparda), Ida Bagus Subhisku, told Beritabali.com on Monday, August 23, 2010, that the survey will also allow the government to reassess the need for travel agents in Bali, as the current number is considered to far exceed market demand. Moreover, the majority of travel agents in Bali are concentrated in the regency of Badung and the city of Denpasar.
Explained Subhisku: "What's more, in the two regencies of Klungkung and Karangasem there are no tour agencies. We are also looking at demand in Bali, if there are really 400 travel agents in Bali, then let's control that."
All travel agents in Bali will be re-registered and surveyed between September 1 and October 15, 2010 with each agency required to submit their operating details and present valid operating licenses. Those who fail to submit and satisfy the process will be closed.
A preliminary survey by the Bali Tourism Service indicates there are 658 registered tour and travel agents in Bali with only 226 actively operating, of which only 216 have valid operating licenses.
