The former Regent (Bupati) of Gianyar, Anak Agung Gede Bharata, and his wife, Nani Bharata, were swept into the sea while walking on Sedayu beach near Klungkung on Sunday, September 5, 2010. Agung (61) narrowly escaped drowning in the incident while his wife, Nani Mirna Bharata (57), died in the surf.
The couple reportedly began walking along Lepang beach at 9:30 am after shopping at the Klungkung market. When they tried to ford a river, the heavy current of the stream swept Nani out to sea. Following after his wife in a futile attempt to save her, Agung was also swept into the heavy surf.
Some hours later the woman's body was recovered at Lebih Beach while the former Bupati was recovered near Selukat beach.
Floating in the waters for nearly 4 hours, both were presumed dead at the scene and taken to the Sanjiwani Hospital where Agung, to the surprise of all, regained consciousness.
Anak Agung Gede Bharata served as Regent of Gianyar from 2003-2008.
Nani Bharata's body was sent to Java for burial near her place of birth pending plans for a Balinese cremation at a later date. Her husband still hospitalized and recovering from his near drowning, was released from the hospital in the company of a medical team in order to attend his wife's burial.
