A joint exercise between special Kopassus forces of the Indonesian military and SAS commandos from Australia produced a dramatic drill involving helicopters and tens of shock troops retake Bali Ngurah Rai Airport in a practice assault that saw "the terrorist" defeated in only three minutes.

This is Only a Test

Widely covered by both the print and electronic media in Indonesia, 15 "terrorists" took control of the airport and held passengers hostage. The drill saw the make-believe terrorists demand the government release from prisons those charged with terrorist crimes within 48 hours, while also demanding an aircraft be prepared for their escape.

As reported by beritabali.com, the Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces responded by issuing orders to Kopassus to take the necessary steps to regain control of the airport and release all hostages. Helicopters and ground troops rushed to the airport. Heavily-armed and highly-trained soldiers drove motorcycles down the ramps of landing helicopters, troops rolled into the airport in armored personnel carriers and armed soldiers dressed as caterers worked their way towards the next of terrorists.

The rapid-fire assault lasted only a few minutes and saw the 15 "make-believe" terrorists disarmed, with some of there number either killed or wounded as the Australian and Indonesian forces rushed through the terminal firing rounds of blanks.

The operation that would have done credit to a Hollywood action films, was dubbed "Dawn Komodo 10" and included 50 Kopassus members and 20 SAS fighters.

Major General Lodewijk Paulus, the Commanding General of Kopassus, told the press: "The first goal of the joint exercise was to enhance the cooperation between these two armed forces. Now, the implications are to increase professionals through a drill that resembles a real field situation."
