Haji Mohamad Sodiq, (47) is now under arrest by the South Kuta police in Bali in connection with his involvement with the theft of Rp. 2 billion (US$222,000)†from his employers. Sodiq works as a general cashier at the Hotel Putri Bali in Nusa Dua, Bali.

According to the Bali Post, Sodiq has admitted to police that he embezzled the funds to pay for his faltering poultry breeding business.

The head of the South Kuta police precinct, Nanang Prihasmoko, said on Monday, October 11, 2010, that the modus operandi employed by that man involved failing to deposit the hotel's funds in the designated account with a local bank. Instead of depositing the money, the man kept the funds for his own used resulting in a loss of Rp. 2,086,043,963 (US$232,000). Said Prihasmoko: "The perpetrator is in custody. We are still developing the case. The suspect has admitted the money has been used for his poultry business."

Prihasmoko explained that the man was still involved in the theft of funds as recently as August 30, 2010, when money received from the hotel's restaurant cashier, front office and from bill collectors were not transferred to the bank account maintained by the Hotel, but, instead, diverted to the pocket of the errant hotel employee. "The funds should have been stored and sent to the hotel's account at Bank BNI. But, instead, the man did not do this," said Prihasmoko.

Over the course of eight routine deposits Sodiq either deposited only a portion of the proceeds to the Hotel's accounts or deposited no funds at all. The stolen funds were diverted by the Cashier to his poultry business which eventually went bankrupt.

Sought out by the Bali Post in his detention cell at the South Kuta police station, Sodiq admitted the theft, claiming he was made desperate by the need to secure funds for his agricultural business. The cashier who received Rp. 2 million per month in salary has little hope of returning the stolen funds, and now awaits a final punishment from the courts.
