By 2015 Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport to be totally overwhelmed, well beyond its carrying capacity, by 2015 if the planned airport renovations are not completed.
Data from the Transportation, Information and Communications department reports that the passengers that traveled through Bali's airport last year hit 9.6 million, passing the threshold of full capacity put at 9.5 million.
Made Santha, chief of the transportation service explained to Beritabali.com that the under-capacity of the current airport is evidenced in the lack of parking at the airport.
Extensive renovations slated to begin this month will increase the capacity of the airport to at least 20 million. Said Santha: "thus, the development of Ngurah Rai Airport which will begin in November 2010 and be completed by March 2013 is targeted to handle a capacity of 20-25 million passengers per year."
Santha told the press that his office was in the midst of conducting a feasibility study for a 2nd airport in Buleleng, North Bali as a means of more fairly distribution development in the island.
