An official of the Bali branch of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), Diah Handyani, told NusaBali that three beach areas in Bali are most at risk to a tsunami wave. The three areas are in Kuta, Tanjung Benoa and Sanur.
These three areas - all facing Bali's southern ocean - are considered most at risk to a tsunami.
Because of this, Diah said that the PMI has undertaking tsunami simulation drills involving the local population, including security officials employed on the village level. "Training for a potential tsunami begins with the creation of evacuation routes in areas considered at risk," she added.
In the event of an actual tsunami, residents and guests in the affected areas would hear the tsunami siren alarms that would be sounded as little as 5-10 minutes before an actual wave reached the shoreline, depending on the location of the causal seismic event. Local officials would then help the populace seek safety via established evacuation routes or in the upper floors of designated buildings in areas where effective escape by land was not an option.
