Suspected to be suffering from stress and depression, a 27-year Australian tourist, Simon Monthey (27), briefly held a young waitress hostage at a drinks stand at the Bali Galeria Mall on Tuesday, January 25, 2011.
The man reportedly entered the mall in an agitated state and took Kadek Widiani (20) hostage with a pair of scissors kept at the MM Juice Stand where the young woman worked as a waitress.
Responding to an emergency call, police rushed to the mall where they managed to persuade Monthey to release the girl unharmed and allow police to bring him to the nearby Bali International Medical Clinic Hospital (BIMC) for observational and examination.
Police said the man was suffering from acute depression and desperately wished to return to his native Australia.
