Bali's governor Made Mangku Pastika has asked the regent of Karangasem, Wayan Geredeg, to bring the number of kafes in his region under control, demanding that no new permits be issued for the road side businesses often fronting for commercial sex establishments.

The governor's request was delivered during a visit by the governor to the village of Ban in Karangasem on Saturday, February 19, 2011. Said Pastika, "I have asked the regent of Karangasem not to grant permits to new kafes and to bring into line those already in operation before they spread down to the village level."

According to the Bali Post, the governor says that the presence of kafes that sell alcohol served by sexually desirable waitresses, have been proven to also serve as centers for criminal activity in a number of regencies and cities across Bali. These kafes often witness violent fights among customers, become dens of freelance criminal activity involving extortion, and are known as areas of illegal narcotics trading.

In the case of Karangasem, the Bali Post has reported how an unemployed man recently was involved in the murder and robbery of an employee of an excavation pit because of his love affair with a young women employed as a hostess at a nearby kafe. The murderer reportedly committed the crime in order to buy gifts and other items demanded by the bar hostess.

In response to the governor's request, regent Geredeg insisted to the press that there are no kafes operating in Karangasem, proclaiming he is committed to not granting licenses to such enterprises. However, reports in the press quoting local residents in Karangasem confirm at least one such kafe is operating in Candidasa, prompting complaints regarding the loud amplified music that is disturbing the surrounding community.
