The vice-chairman of the Bali Guide Association (HPI Bali), Sangtu Subaya, has issued a reminder to drivers bringing tourists around the island o tours that they are not permitted to accompany tourists on their visits to tourist objects and attractions. Moreover, drivers are being generally discouraged from giving tourist information to their passengers.
As reported by Bisnis Bali, Subaya admitted that while it is impossible to prevent the free exchange of information between drivers and their passengers inside a moving car, drivers who are not in possession of a guide license are strictly prohibited from accompanying their passengers when touring temples and other tourist attractions. Insisting that drivers should never purchase admission tickets for their passengers and remain near their vehicles in the parking lot, Subaya underlined that only guides licensed by the province are entitled to accompany guests through tourist objects and provide destination information.
While tourists hiring drivers are not obliged to hire tour guides, drivers attempting to fill that role are subject to apprehension by police and tourism officials who regularly patrol tourist object on the look out for unlicensed guides.
