As reported by balidiscovery.com the people of Beraban village in Tabanan have participated in marches and protest demanding a say in the management of the Tanah Lot Tourist site and a share in the profits derived from admissions.
After being threatened with a "battle to the death" (puputan), the regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, has bowed to public demands and set aside the current managers of Tanah Lot, CV Ari Jasa Wisata.
In a closed meeting at the Tabanan regent's office on Monday, April 4, 2011, it was determined that the management of the tourism object will be shared by the village of Beraban and the regency's government.
Emerging from the "closed door" meeting, the spokesman for the Tabanan regency, I Nengah Judiana, outlined five points of general agreement achieved in the session. First, the tripartite agreement in place from 2002 – 20009 between the Tabanan government, CV Ari Jasa Wisata and the village of Beraban has been terminated. Second, with the dismissal of CV Ari Jasa Wisata a temporary management body will be in place to manage Tanah Lot on a day-to-day basis. Third, whatever the final outcome of the management debate on Tanah Lot, the 15% share of revenues paid in the past to the site managers can only be disbursed with the agreement of the regent of Tabanan. The remaining 55% for the Tabanan government, 20% for the Village of Tabanan, the 5% from the Tanah Lot temple and the remaining 5% for surrounding traditional villages remain unchanged. Fourth, effective April 1, 2011, the management of Tanah Lot is under the Tabanan regency administration. And, fifth, the final decision on the future management of Tanah Lot will be based on recommendation from the regional House of Representatives (DPRD-Tabanan).
The Bendesa of the village of Beraban, Wayan Arwata, told Nusa Bali that he was very satisfied with the new agreement achieved with the Tabanan government.
