For Whom the Tears Flow

12 Year-Old North Bali Boy the Latest Victim of Rabies.

Bali News: For Whom the Tears Flow

(4/26/2011)

On Wednesday, April 20, 2011, the children of Grade 6 of Elementary School No,II from the village of Dencarik, Buleleng gathered in their uniforms of white and red for a most solemn parade. The boys and girls, accompanied by their teachers, gathered together to tearfully carry the remains of their 12-year-old classmate, Putu Edo Surya Wiranata, to the village setra where the boy's body was buried to await cremation at a later date in accordance with Bali-Hindu ritual.

The young boy is the latest victim in the rabies epidemic that has claimed more than 130 lives since it first surfaced in late 2008.

The boy who was bitten by a neighborhood dog in December of 2010 while walking to school after a lapse of 5 month began to display symptoms consistent with the clinical stage of rabies, dying a few day later on April 13, 2011.
