Two formers officials in the Bali Tourism Office were sentenced to one year imprisonment each after being declared guilty of corrupting funds from the tourism promotion budget.
Drs. I Gede Nurjaya (shown), the former head of the Bali provincial tourism office (Kadiparda) and his subordinate I Gusti Putra Ambara were found guilty of the misuse of power and corruption by a panel of judges lead by Posma P. Nainggolan in a sentence handed down on Thursday, May 12, 2011.
The one year's sentence will be credited for the time the two men have been incarcerated awaiting trial. Nurjaya was arrested in October 2010.
The men were also given a Rp. 50 million (US$5,700) fine and order to each pay Rp. 48,870,852 (US$5,555) in compensation to the State. Should the men fail to pay the fine an additional two-month imprisonment will be added to their sentences. Failure to pay the compensation ordered by the court will allow the court to seize personal property for auction by the State.
The men were found guilty of conspiring to defraud the State by seeking double reimbursement from both national and provincial tourism budgets for the cost of representation of the World Travel Mart held in London in 2008.
