The Badung House of Representatives (DPRD-Badung) wants stricter enforcement of the illegal rental vehicles and gypsy taxis operating in the Kuta area of Bali.
A member of Commission C of the DPRD-Badung, I Wayan Puspa Negara, told the Bali Post that the presence of the unlicensed tourist vehicles is causing unrest and traffic cogestion, especially when they are parked illegally along the streets of Kuta.
He contends that the illegal taxis and chartered vehicles are contributing to traffic congestion, with many operators parking their vehicles on sidewalks while looking for customers. According to Puspa Negara, the culprits include rental cars, gypsy taxis, motorbikes and even push bikes. The main street affected by the over-crowding are Jalan Legian, Jalan Pantai Kuta, Jalan Melasti and Jalan Seminyak-Kerobokan. The vehicle operators tend to park their cars on sidewalks and shoulders of the road, placing signs on the top or windows of the vehicles offering them for charter.
Puspa Negara also questioned the legality of the rental vehicles, asking if they hold the mandatory tourism transport licenses required by law. He called on the Transportation, Information and Communication Service (Dishubinfokom) of Badung and the Association for Tourism Transportation (Pawiba) to bring the illegal vehicles into compliance with the law.
