Policeman First Brigadier Sutrawan, a former member of the anti-narcotics squad of the Tabanan police precinct, has been handed a 12-year prison sentence and a fine of Rp. 150 million (US$17,050) by a panel of judges in a verdict delivered before the Tabanan District Court on Tuesday, June 7, 2011.
The sentence meted out by the judges was three years less than the 15 years requested by State prosecutors. If the convicted former policemen is unable to pay the Rp. 150 million fine, an additional 6 months will be added to his dozen-year imprisonment.
According the Beritabali.com, the narcotics officer was arrested with 4995 ecstasy pills in his possession when he was arrested by fellow narcotics officers in September 2010.
His arrest followed observations of unusual activities by the young police officer and information from people detained for narcotic offenses indicating the policeman's involvement in the drug trade.
He was arrested on Jalan Gunung Agung in Tabanan at a fellow policeman's home carrying a bag filled with thousands of ecstasy tablets.
