A domestic tour group visiting Bali from Central Java suffered 21 serious injuries and one death when the bus on which they were traveling overturned and ran off of the road near Gitgit village in Buleleng, Bali on Saturday, June 18, 2011.
The accident occurred at about 3 p.m. when the buses brakes reportedly failed while descending a mountain on a curve.
A total of 42 passengers were on board the bus, destined for the Bali seaport of Gilimanuk and the ferry service back to Java, when it went out of control. The bus, which ran off the road, was only prevented from falling into a deep ravine by trees, which halted the vehicle's descent.
The Bus was operated by the Wisata Nusantara Transportation Company from Central Java.
The injured received initial treatment in the Emergency Department of the Buleleng General Hospital where a 51-year-old female passenger, Sri Ulfayani, died due to internal injuries. At least one other passenger was hospitalized in the intensive care unit with head injuries. One week after the accident a total of 16 passengers reportedly remained hospitalized as the result of the crash.
