During the first half of 2011, a total of 103 people encountered difficulties while swimming on Bali’s beaches requiring the assistance of the Bali Lifeguard Service (Balawista). Of that total 100 were successfully rescued while 3 perished.
During the just passed busy holiday month of June, the number of incidents came to 23 with one drowning reported.
Shown on Balidiscovery.com are a tabluation of the accident and fatality rates over the past 5.5 years on Bali's southern beaches.
Bali lifeguard Ketut Sandi, quoted by
NusaBali said on Wednesday, June 19, 2011: “There are actually many factors in the fatalities. Usually people do not obey the ‘no swimming area’ warning flags we install. Sometimes strong currents carry them away. Accidents also occur when they are unable to control their body boards and are dashed against the coral reefs.”
It is not only swimmers who fall victim to Bali’s seas, but the waves also claim people fishing the surf. No respecter of nationality, both foreign and domestic visitors alike fall victim to drowning incidents in Bali.
