(12/18/2010) Indonesian-born, Singapore-based pastry chef and freelance food and travel writer - Adithya Pratama  recently visited Bali on a working holiday. A contributor to the on-line [], Adithya paid a call on Potato Head Beach Club Restaurant in Seminyak.

Potato Head Beach Club – Bali

When you get tired of exploring the mind boggling array of food available in Bali and the beautifully vibrant culture that serves as backdrop, what do more do you need? A day off to relax? A dip in a great pool, sipping on a Pina Colada? A chance to work on your holiday tan? The simple refuge of comforting food?  All these and more await at the Potato Head Beach Club in Seminyak - home to wonderful food that  I call “honest cuisine.”

Located  in the heart of Seminyak's Jalan Petitenget, the Potato Head Beach Club has joined the lively crowd of existing entertainment and dining venues. Opened in 2011, the establishment was Instantly recognized because of its famous namesake – the Potato Head Restaurant in Pacific Place, Jakarta. However, the Bali outlet provides the added attraction of outstanding view of the Bali Straits.

Potato Head Beach Club also offers a laid-back feel via a number of relaxing areas within the club:  sofa-beds by the pool for those seeking sun and a tan while taking an occasion dip in a gorgeous swimming pool;  a lounge area that exudes a homey feel via hand-picked furniture and local handicrafts accessories; and a convivial and inviting common dining area – all of which share an amazing view of the beautiful beach and the ocean beyond.

A kids-friendly establishment with family crowds serving as their main patrons, this beachside retreat also features regular Potato Head Sunday Markets - events that hosts many of Balinese best  food purveyors (one of them: Bali’s best – kept bread secret - Kayuapi Bakery) and fun games for kids and the young-at-heart. When the sun goes down, Potato Head Beach Club hosts DJs - both local and international, who help guests dance the night away. The Club recently hosted an Australian “Flickerfest” - a short-movie festival that promises to become an annual event.

Potato Head Beach Club has earned a justifiable reputation for "honest cuisine" via such dishes as Lasagna with creamy béchamel sauce, meaty bolognaise and rich melted cheese layers, served in classic French cast-iron dish; and the French classic - Quiche Lorraine with layer of caramelized onion that I’m instantly in love with. Also not to be missed is the tender bacon-wrapped pork loin with honey and red wine vinegar sauce, complemented with smooth and luscious mashed potatoes served on the side.

For the sweet tooth, the Potato Head Sundae boasts a medley of five scoops of ice cream, mixed berry espuma and Crème Chantilly  crowned  with a cherry on top -  which can help form the close a perfect day in Bali. Alternatively, try a warm Pear Bourdaloue – the timeless French dessert of sliced caramelized pear and almond cream encased in a thin crust of short-crust pastry, served with vanilla ice cream.  

Providing comfort food at its best with great Tiki-Style drinks from the pool bar and a remarkable physical establishment, Potato Head Beach Club also promises new, exciting concepts in the near future. Reliable sources tell me to expect Asian-styleTapas accompanied with fresh seafood.
