A 33-year-old Frenchman, Karim Chabib, has been sentenced to one year in prison after being convicted of possessing 44.6 grams of marijuana found in his private villa in Legian, Bali.
Police found the stash of illegal drugs in the toilet and bedroom of the villa during a raid on the premises on March 28, 2011.
According to the Jakarta Globe, Chabib pleaded before the court that the drugs were used for pain relief following a traffic accident sustained in France. When asked by the court to produce a doctor’s certificated verifying his need for medical marijuana, the Frenchman was unable to document his dependency to the satisfaction of the courts and was sentenced to one year’s prison.
The sentence was 6-months less than the 1.5 years demanded by prosecutors.
Chabib and his Indonesian lawyer are now weighing whether or not to appeal the sentence.
