President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has appointed the Director General of Marketing at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Sapta Nirwandar, to the new post of Vice-Minister of Culture and Tourism.
The newly created post will make Nirwandar the nation’s second highest tourism official after the current Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik.
In accepting the new post, Nirwandar, after meeting the President on Thursday, October 13, 2011, said: “I ask for help in becoming the Vice-Minister of Culture and Tourism. This represents an honor for me. My duty awaits.”
Sapta said that during his meeting with the President, Yudhoyono asked him to develop national tourism. Saying this was the job of everyone in his Ministry, he called on his colleagues to work harder, adding, “no more business as usual.”
The President also called on Sapta to develop tourism on a basis that is both creative and culturally-based.
Nirwander was born 57 years ago in Lampung, South Sumatra. He graduated from the Economic Faculty of UNPAD University in Bandung in 1978 before undertaking post-graduate studies in Paris.
A career spent in public service, he has held important posts in the National Secretariat, Ministry of Sea and Fisheries and most recently with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
