InterContinental Bali Resort celebrated its 18th anniversary on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, in a series of joyous celebrations involving both the resort's staff and guests.
The happy day began with an early morning, traditional tumpeng
ceremony on the lawn of Taman Gita Terrace
. A yellow cone of rice, surrounded by spicy side dishes, the tumpeng
was ceremoniously cut by the resort’s general manager, Tom Meyer. The tumpeng ritual
is a part of many Indonesian ceremonies, symbolizing thanksgiving and the sharing of prosperity. Department heads dressed in Balinese costumes distributed small portions of the rice to well wishers, colleagues and guests.
Later, an anniversary luncheon was held in the Puri Kencana Ballroom
for all resort co-workers. The happy lunch featured a number of Balinese delicacies, such as roast suckling pig. A huge birthday cake was cut as balloons dropped from the ceiling. A special video presentation was also shown of milestone moments in the Resort’s history over the past 18 years.
To add to the festive spirit, guests staying at the hotel on the anniversary were offered selected "2 for the price of 1"
body and beauty treatments at Spa Uluwatu
. Guest were also extended happy hour benefits until midnight at the Sunset Bar. Throughout the day, every guest also received a complimentary welcome cocktail at check in, a glass of wine or beer during dinner.
InterContinental Bali Resort
was opened 18 years ago at a ceremony officiated over by Indonesia’s President Soeharto. The first luxury property of its kind to be built on the shores of Jimbaran Bay, the hotel was designed to harmonize with the surrounding environments and pay tribute to the island’s artistic and cultural heritage.
Many original staff members are still working at the Resort and participated in the anniversary celebrations.
