The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has grounded the pilot and co-pilot of Sriwijaya Airlines flight SJ021 that landed at the wrong airport in Padang, West Sumatra on October 13, 2012.
Bisnis.com reports that the flight landed at the Tabing Padang Airport in Padang when, in fact, it was scheduled to land at the nearby Minangkabau International Airport.
The embarrassing mis-landing has prompted the grounding of the two pilots involved pending a review of the incident by aviation authorities. The investigators are trying to determine how the pilot and co-pilot managed to bring their aircraft carrying 96 passengers from Medan, North Sumatra to the wrong airport in Padang, West Sumatra.
Depending on the results of the investigations, the erring pilots could potentially be issued formal warnings, have their licenses suspended, or see their flight certification reduced.
A preliminary review of the incident indicates the pilots received clearance to land at Minangkabau International Airport from air traffic control (ATC) when the pilots lined their aircraft up on the wrong runway at the wrong airport, now used exclusively by the Indonesian Air Force.
The Captain Pilot of the flight was Captain J. Gisdonious and the co-pilot was Ricky Yusof.
Fortunately, the flight landed safely, albeit at the wrong airport, with no injuries to its crew or passengers.
