The Bali Culinary Professionals (BCP) are sending a talented young chef from Bali, Marcel Sumarga of Bulgari Bali Hotels and Resorts, to represent the island in the upcoming International World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS) sanctioned competition, the Hans Bueschkens Junior Chefs Challenge May 7-10, 2013 at Hong Kong.
The right to represent Bali at the prestigious cooking competition was won at a cook off held on November 10, 2012 at the
Bali Tourism Academy (STP) held among 9 outstanding local chefs, all under the age of 25.
A panel of
WACS-certified judges evaluated contestants‚ performance and menus in determining the winner.
“Competing for an international level is a completely different ballgame,” said Marcel. “The pressure is greater, the stakes are higher and you don‚t have the slightest idea of who you are up against. I kept reminding myself to compete against myself. It was also a great feeling knowing that I had done the best I could:
“It was exciting to watch them all,” said Made Putra, vice president of BCP. “They showed confidence and precision in preparing meals, worthy of international culinary competition.
BCP is proud of their performance.”
Runner ups from
Banyan Tree garnered second and third place, followed by
Bulgari Bali in fourth place, winning the opportunity to represent Indonesia in the young chefs competition category at
The Food Show in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia September 2013.
