Rudy Siswanto, a driver from Bali Prima Tourist Transport, has been apprehended by Bali police while attempting to smuggle four dogs and a civet cat from Java into Bali via the port of Gilimanuk.
The importation of dogs and other pets from outside Bali is strictly prohibited as parts of the island’s drive to eliminate rabies.
Siswanto managed to sneak the animals past inspectors at the ferry port of Gilimanuk only to be caught in a police roadside inspection in Tembles, Mendoyo.
The animals were all caged in plastic kennel boxes complete with the names and addresses of individuals in Bali designated to take delivery of the animals.
As reported by Radar Bali, the small bus, its driver and its illegal shipment of animals were all detained at the Mendoyo police station.
The driver, Siswanto, admitted that this was the second time he had smuggled animals from Java.
Following its apprehension by police, the vehicle was delayed in its journey awaiting the arrival of quarantine officials from Gilimanuk. The illegal importation of animals is in violation of the law can result in a fine and imprisonment.
Standing procedures are for any animal confiscated in such instance ae for their destruction by quarantine officials.
