Bali by the Numbers: 2012 Arrivals for Bali Show Days of Rapid Tourism Growth Now Officially at an End

The final foreign tourist arrivals for 2012 are now in hand, showing Bali welcomed a record 2,892,019 overseas visitors last year, an increase of 4.91% over the arrivals recorded in 2011.

Clearly, Bali’s days of double-digit tourism growth are at an end.
While Bali foreign tourist arrivals yielded an average annual growth of 9.38% over the five year period 2008-2012, an uncertain world economy offers little prospects that growth rates in excess of 10% will reappear again anytime soon.
Australia. Australia’s phenomenal growth in arrivals that have placed it indisputably in the lead among all source markets for Bali slowed to just 4.15% in 2012, down from the 22% growth recorded just one year before.
People’s Republic of China. The PRC increased 31.26% in 2012 – a growth rate that might be sustained as Indonesia and China actively explore means of opening access to Bali for Chinese tourists.
Japan. After years of free fall from their former primacy as a source of visitors of Bali, the good news is that Japan may be undergoing a reversal of fortune. In 2012 Japan managed to post its first gain in tourist arrivals in many years, improving 4.67% over 2011.
Southeast Asia. Both Malaysia (+6.03%) and Singapore (+8.82%) posted respectable growth in arrivals in 2012. Meanwhile, South Korea travelers declined 3.84% and Taiwan dropped by an astounding 25.62%.
ASEAN arrivals as a whole increased 10.22% in 2012
Europe: The best performer in Europe was the U.K. improving 6.9% in 2012; Germany held its own increasing 1.5%, while Russian arrivals increased 2.95%. The Netherlands continued its decline down 10.89% in 2012.
Overall, European arrivals to Bali declined 0.60%.
U.S.A. The American market increased 4.94% in 2012. For the entire Americas, including Canada and South America, arrivals in 2012 improved 4.41%.
