46 room boys and housekeeping attendants from across Bali gathered at the Hotel Radisson Sanur on Monday, September 23, 2002, to compete in a room set-up competition.
Organized by the local chapter of the Indonesian Housekeeper's Association (IHKA), the competition tested the competitive skills at cleaning and preparing a room for sale to its next occupant.
In opening the competition, Mr. I Nyoman Rutha Ady, S.H., representing the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), heralded the event as helping to prepare local hotel workers to compete in the increasing open labor markets promised in 2004 under the AFTA regime.
Mr. Nyoman Astike, the Bali IHKA Chairman, said the event was the first of its kind held in Bali and that his organization is seeking permission for the event to be held on the national level in Bali in November 2002.
