Total tourism arrivals for all of Indonesia for January-February 2013 totaled 1,245,194 - a total that increased significantly from the same two months in 2012.
Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy, Mari Elka Pangestu, told The Jakarta Post that the tourism sector continues to show signs of growth even though the world economy has yet to return to full stability.
February 2013 arrivals to all of Indonesia in totaled 678,415 visitors, an increase of 14.5% compared to arrivals in February 2012 when 592,502 tourist visitors arrived.
On a cumulative basis for January-February 2013, a total 1,292,743 foreign tourists visited Indonesia, up 3.87 from the same period in 2012 (1,245,194).
The Minister explained: “According to our analysis, the increase of tourists visiting Indonesia in February 2013 is due to the celebration of Chinese New Year that fell this year in February. This effect can be seen by the increase in arrivals from Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, China and even Hong Kong. Within the framework of Chinese New Year in February 2013, a number of national airline companies such as Lion Air, Sriwijaya Airlines and Garuda Indonesia have undertake special promotions."
Statistics kept by the government showed an increase month-on-month in arrivals fro China and Hong Kong of 73.1% and 84.3%, respectively.
In 2012 total foreign visitors to Indonesia totaled 8,044,462 – representing an increase of 5.2% compared to total arrivals in 2011.
