(4/14/2013)

Yayasan Bali Peduli have announced the appointment of Tono Permana Muhamas as that organization’s executive director. Board president, Lily Wardoyo, said: “We are delighted that Tono Permana has agreed to join Yayasan Bali Peduli in the new role of executive director. Having a leader such as Tono, with his many years of NGO experience, will allow us to take Bali Pedul to the next level in terms of our provision for service towards prevention and for people living with HIV/AIDS."

Tono will begin his new job on May 15, 2013, Currently he is executive director of The Indonesian Gay, Waria and Other MSMS National Network (GWL-INA) based in Jakarta.

Said Tono: “I’m pleased to join Bali Peduli because Bali Peduli is a very good example of how the community can respond to the HIV epidemic on Bali, especially for gay men. Bali Peduli also has proved that the community service for STI and HIV are really needed. My dream is only one, to do more and encourage people to take care of their own health by increasing their knowledge abut HIV.”

Founder and board member, Dr. Steve Wignall said, “I have known Tono professionally for many years and could not be happier to have him working with us at Bali Peduli. He brings an impressive experience working in HIV in Indonesia and international recognition for his work on HIV prevention and care in the region,"

Preceding Tono’s position at GWL-INA he worked on Bali for four years as Senior Project Assistant with the Burnett Institute and, as a result, is familiar with the HIV stakeholder community on Bali.

A native of Bandung, Tono has also been a consultant to the National AIDS Commission and FHI – USAID. He has been invited to participate in numerous international conferences on MSM and HIV including Vietnam, Mexico, the Netherlands, Thailand, India and Canada.

This is a newly created position at Bali Peduli, which has just opened a new office in Banjar Nyuh Kuning, Ubud. Current programs include the Bali Peduli Clinic at Bali Medika in Kuta that provides free, confidential testing for HIV and other STI, as well as counseling and treatment for HIV+ people.

Since opening the clinic in September 2011, more than 1,000 patients have come fir testing with more than 2,000 follow up visits.

In January 2013, Bali Peduli launched a new Ubud/Gianyar outreach program to encourage high-risk individuals to seek testing and provide “buddies” to support those with HIV. Plans are underway to open a testing clinic in Ubud, similar to the clinic in Kuta, in early May 2013 at Puskesmas Sayan. In addition, Bali Peduli has an education program focusing on the Gianyar regency to provide information about HIV to banjars and young people.
