Giving a global event local significance, the Four Seasons' “Hope for Life” walk and cycle to battle cancer will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2013.

The modern evolution of a long standing annual event first launched as the Terry Fox Run, the “Hope for Life” event is open to all to participate in a 15 kilometer fun bike ride and 5 kilometer fun walk starting at 7:00 am.

The route begins and finishes at the Lapangan Puputan Niti Mandala Renon in central Denpasar, the capital of Bali. A celebratory party will follow the challenge with light snacks and live music.

This event will raise funds for cancer awareness and treatment in Bali. Past “Hope For Life” events in Bali have provided funds for cancer care and treatment, working in cooperation with Yayasan Mitra Peduli Kanker. Because of these contributions, many Bali residents have benefited from free health seminars and cancer screenings, as well as counseling for families.

Four Seasons “Hope for Life” is inspired by the courageous story of Terry Fox, a Canadian teenager who was diagnosed with bone cancer and underwent the amputation of his right leg. In 1980, with only one leg and a prosthetic device, he set out to run all the way across Canada – a distance of some 8000 kilometers – as a fundraiser for cancer research. Sadly, his battle with cancer cut his run short, but his determination proved to be a great inspiration.

One of the people motivated by Terry was Isadore Sharp, founder of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. When Terry could not complete his journey, Sharp telegrammed Terry to promise that a run would be held in his name every year, writing: “You started it. We will not rest until your dream to find a cure for cancer is realized.” Terry pinned this telegram to his hospital bed and expressed how much the message meant to him. Terry Fox lost his batter with cancer when the disease took his life in 1981.

The Four Seasons Resorts in Bali have taken Isadore Sharp’s global promise made to Terry Fox and joined Four Season’s staff members around the world and local community members in an annual commitment to walk and cycle to raise funds in every city in which a Four Seasons Hotel or resort operates.

Sharp, whose commitment to the campaign was sharpened through the loss of a son to cancer, believes that one day a brilliant researcher – perhaps one funded by a Terry Fox grant – will find a cure for the disease.

“Terry did not lose the fight,” Sharp says. “Terry’s dream was to raise awareness of cancer, and he lived to see it fulfilled. His achievement is a stunning reminder of what can be accomplished when just one person sets out to make a difference. Four Seasons is proud to have played a role in helping Terry’s dream come true – and in ensuring that it lives on through worldwide participation in the extraordinary fundraising event that he inspired.”
