The focus of criticism from many quarters regarding the poor quality of the final workmanship on Bali’s new Dewa Ruci Underpass at Simpang Siur, the developer of the expensive road project remains oblivious to such verbal assaults.
Ignoring complaints that the project remains undone in terms of final handover quality, the Department of Public Works for Badung Regency has pushed ahead by holding a ritual pamelaspasan ceremony.
The Chief of the National Road Department for Denpasar, H. Juni Wahjudiono, excused the rush to hold a ritual blessing for the road, saying plans to hold the ceremony had been planned a long time ago.
The ceremony was held on Tuesday, June 13, 2013.
In response to those criticizing the quality of Balinese ornamentation used on the walls of the underpass, Wahjudiono and the project manager, Hendro Satrio, emphasized the ornaments on the underpass were not “cheap.”
Wahjudiono explained: “The ornamentation duplicates those installed at Bali’s renovated airport. The materials are the same. These are not cheap. Moreover, the cost of the ornamentation alone is around Rp. 500 million (US$500,000).”
He did not address complaints that the cement pavement at the bottom of the underpass was unevenly and inexpertly installed, requiring the roadway be broken up and a new cement base installed,
