Bring Protests to a Summit

Tanjung Benoa Residents Threatening APEC Summit with Mass Protests if Governor Does Not Abandon Benoa Bay Reclamation Plans

The Bali Post reports that people living in the Tanjung Benoa area of Bali are promising to continue protesting until Governor Pastika revokes his written recommendation for the reclamation of Benoa Bay, vowing to stage even larger public demonstrations during the APEC Summit of world leaders to be held in Bali in early October 2013.

The spokesman for a group from Tanjung Benoa calling itself “Gemper,” I Kadek Duarsa, told the press during a protest rally on Friday, August 2, 2013: “If the governor does not withdraw his letter of recommendation, we will stage larger actions during the APEC Summit. We desire peace. We are secure in Tanjung Benoa. Don’t try to further intimidate us. If the reclamation takes place, it’s clear that Tanjung Benoa will be the victim.”

Another Tanjung Benoa community leader, Made Sugianta, sounded a similar threat saying the protests would continue until plans for the reclamation of Benoa Bay are abandoned. Saying that if the public cries of protest are ignored the government should expect mass demonstrations during the APEC Conference in October of sufficient size to disrupt the coming Summit. “If we are not heard, don’t blame me if larger demonstrations result,” added Sugianta.

The village leader from Tanjung Benoa complained that the public has never received an explanation of plans to reclaim Benoa Bay, with the people only promised that Pudut Island covering 8 hectares would be restored. According to Sugianta, no mention was ever made by the government of larger plans to reclaim large areas of Benoa Bay. Adding: “We never agreed to reclamation of 838 hectares. We only agreed to the reclamation of Pudut Island covering 8-hectares and a ring road for Tanjung Benoa. This is based on meetings held in the village.”
