Hindu Youth in Bali Stage Demonstration in Support of Miss World Contest

In the midst of a barrage of criticism and calls by Indonesian Islamist groups for the cancellation of the Miss World Contest in Bali, the Indonesian Alliance of Hindu Youth in Bali (Aliansi Hindu Muda Indonesia Bali) held a demonstration in support of the internationally known beauty contest.

 
Held on Monday, September 2, 2013, the demonstration took place at the Puputuan Badung Field in front of the Denpasar Mayor’s Office. Involving an estimated 100 protestors, the demonstrators held posters and banners criticizing the Islamic organizations opposing the Miss World Contest accusing these groups of trying to disrupt Bali’s security and as being opposed to the pluralistic values embodied in the State philosophy of Pancasila.
 
Among the organizations who have calling for the cancellation of the Miss World Contest are the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and The Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI).
 
As reported by Beritabali.com, the coordinator of the Indonesian Alliance of Hindu Youth in Bali, I Gede Mas Megantara, said there is no basis for FPI's and MUI’s rejection of the Miss World Contest. Adding: “The Miss World Contest is not pornographic or displaying the intimate parts of the contestants. The organizers have promised there will not be what can be described as a ‘bikini.’ They will consistently follow the customs and traditions of Bali. So, there’s nothing to make a fuss about as regards the Miss World Contest.”
 
During the demonstration in front of the Mayor’s office, the protestors made speeches and handed out leaflets outlining the stance of those religiously opposed to the pageant.
 
Banners seen at the location of the protest proclaimed:
 
“Organize your Own Morality”
 
“Bali doesn’t interfere in the business of MUI. MUI don’t interfere in Bali’s Affairs.”
 
“Hai, Bro, this is a Hindu territory, the Miss World Contest in Bali"
 
Evict Mass Organizations that Disturb Bali"
 
“We Reject MUI’s interference in the Affairs of Bali” 
 
“The citizens of Bali are ready to confront Islamic mass organizations that are opposed to Pancasila and disturb the peace of Bali."
 
Megantara said the Indonesian Alliance of Hindu Youth in Bali would do whatever it takes to stop various mass organizations from trying to disturb the peace and tranquility of Bali. 
 
Commenting further on the Miss World Contest, he added: “We get free promotion. The positive effect (of the Contest) is great. The profit to the Balinese economy is extraordinary.”
