51 countries are expected to participate in a World Championship of Taekwondo Poomsae to be held in Bali October 31-November 3, 2013.
The chairman of the organizing committee, Ade Lukman, told Tempo.co that as many as 460 athletes from 5 continents will be vying for 28 gold medals in as many categories of competition. “We have also prepared 10 trophies for the best taekwondo contestants,” added Ade.
The Poomsae championships - a combination of basic actions and movements exercised with an imaginary opponent, is being held only for the eighth time.
Matches will be held for individuals, pairs, teams, free-style and by age categories.
Ade Lukman told the press that it was a special honor for Indonesia to be selected to host the world championships of the World Taekwondo Federation.
Indonesia is targeting to win at least two of the gold medals in the coming championships with 21 national athletes slated to participate.
Indonesia only commenced Taekwondo Poomsea competition in the SEA Games of 2011 where it won three gold medals. In 2012 at the poomsae championships Indonesian sent only 4 athletes bringing back a bronze medal. Most recently, at the 3rd Solidarity Games held in Palembang in September Indonesia won one gold, three silver and one bronze medal in poomsae.
