A young boy from the village of Kedisan, Kintamani, Bangli has drowned in a boating mishap on volcanic Lake Batur in Central Bali that occurred on Monday, October 21, 2013.

Dead is I Gede Pariasa (16), who drowned when the simple wooden boat he was riding in with his school companion, Putu Eka Witaya (16), overturned. Witaya managed to hold on to the overturned boat while awaiting rescue, while Pariasa sank into the lake’s waters.

Both boys were from the Bangli area but attended school in Bali’s capital of Denpasar.

As reported by The Bali Post, information from police and local residents say the accident happened at around 12 noon when the boys were sailing a boat to inspect a family garden plot. Some 15 meters from shore, for reasons that remain unexplained, the boat overturned sending the boys into the lake.

While Witaya was saved by local residents, Pariasa drowned with authorities only managing to recover his body two days later.

Strong winds were reported on the lake at the time of the accident.
