Bali by the Numbers: Hotel Occupancies decline in October

(12/6/2013) The Bali Bureau of Statistics (BPS-Bali) records a fall in occupancy among Bali hotels in October 2013. The BPS reports the fall in occupancy mirrors a drop in arrivals during the same period.

The chief of BPS-Bali, Gede Suarsa, told Bisnis Bali on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, that, on the average, hotels in Bali had lower occupancy levels in October than those recorded in September. “This decline is a slight percentage decline when compared to the previous month,” said Suarsa.

The average occupancy for a star-rated hotel in October 2013 stood at 60.57% - a decrease of 3.19 points when compared to September 2013 when occupancy averaged 63.76%.

The highest average occupancies in Bali were recorded in Tabanan at 70.66% while the lowest occupancy occurred in Buleleng at 28.88%.

When compared to the previous month of September 2013, the regencies of Tabanan and Karangasem increased their levels of occupancy by 20.92 points and 7.99 points, respectively. At the same time, occupancies declined in October in Badung, Gianyar and Denpasar.

Among non-starred hotels in Bali in October 2013, occupancy levels declined 1.48 point as compared to September.

Suarsa said the downturn in occupancies in October followed a similar decline in international arrivals. He reported that foreign tourist arrivals in October 2013 totaled 266,562 visitors. This is a decline of 2.78% when compares to foreign tourist arrivals for the previous month of September.

During October 266,452 foreign tourists arrived via Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport while 109 visitors arrived via Bali’s seaports.
