The Road Less Taken

Bali Toll Road Seeking to Improve Service and User Numbers in 2014

(1/2/2014) The operators of the new Bali Mandara Toll Road – PT Jasa Marga Bali Tol – had originally set a target of 39,000 vehicles using the road each day, comprised of both four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles.

The chairman of the Bali Mandara Development organization, Hidayatulloh, told Metrobali.com: “Our vision is to reduce the congestion on conventional roads in Bali. For that reason, we must have a target.”

Since its formal opening on September 23, 2012, the 12.7-kilometer toll road suspended over the waters of Benoa Bay has averaged a reported 36,000 vehicles each day.

Hidayatulloh is optimistic that in 2014 a daily average of 39,000 vehicles will be achieved.

The toll road charges Rp. 4,000 (US$0.30) for motorcycles and Rp. 10,000 (US$ 0.80) for four-wheeled cars and vans.

“We will continue to monitor what was lacking last year. We are obliged to give the best service in the future,” said Hidayatulloh.

The toll road operators say that in addition to proving an effective means shortening the traveling time between Sanur, Kuta and Nusa Dua, there are also many who merely travel the road to enjoy the experience of traveling over the water at a high rate of speed and enjoying the ocean vistas afforded from the roadway. Guests traveling the 12.7-kilomter highway can view the pristine mangrove forest, the passing trade in fishing and commercial boats, and planes landing and taking off from Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport.

At the same time, Hidayatulloh implored the public to be careful in using the toll road and avoid such "narcissistic behavior" as stopping on the toll way to pose for pictures.
