Storm Warning

Indonesian Weather Forecasters Was Cyclone Forming Near Darwin Could Bring Foul Weather to Large Areas of Indonesia

(1/10/2014) The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is urging the Indonesian public to be cautious and prepared for the threat posed by a tropical cyclone forming in the waters between Indonesia and Northwestern Australia.

The deputy in charge of climatology at BMKG, Widada Sulistya, told Suara Pembaruan on Friday, January 10, 2014, said: “A rotation of the winds -  the seeds of a strom system has already been formed and if it grows in strength will become a tropical cyclone.”

The tropical low-pressure system is forming between Darwin, Australia and Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. He said that if the storm cell grows in strength it could be expected to come into being  in 5-7 days time (January 15-17, 2014).

Widada said that Indonesia would not suffer a direct hit from the tropical cyclone but must remain vigilant to its side effects. If the storm develops areas in East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sumatra, Java, Bali and Sulawesi can expect heavy rains, strong winds, high waves and landslides.
