Bali Refusing to Spend on Marketing

Bali Government Accused of Economizing on Tourism Promotion

(1/25/2014) The successful promotion of tourism by the Bali Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD-Bali) is dependent on funding from the government.

Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati (Cok Ace), who leads BPPD-Bali, warned that reduced budgets from the provincial government lessen the focus of the Island’s marketing efforts.

The provincial government of Bali has allocated only Rp. 1.5 billion (US$120,000) for tourism promotion in 2014. This compares to Rp. 4 billion allocated in 2010.

Cok Ace told Bisnis Bali that the BPPD-Bali had developed a detailed promotion program that would require funding from both the government and the private sector.

Given the current lack of funding, Cok Ace sees tourism promotion in 2014 as suffering from the same problems as past years – lacking focus and being only partially effective.

The BPPD official. who also serves as the head of Bali chapter of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI-Bali), complains that the Bali Tourism Promotion Board lack the power to unite the private tourism sector without accompanying funding from the government.
