A Temporary Salvation

Crocodile Found in River Near Ubud Dies One Day After its Removal to The Bali Zoo

(1/25/2014) A 2-meter long crocodile captured at Banjar Juga at Mas, near Ubud and sent to the Bali Zoo has died.

As reported by balidiscovery.com, After a While, Crocodile local villagers using the Wasan River near Ubud became terrified when a crocodile began to occasionally appear while they were fishing or washing in the river.

A massive search of the river and surrounding areas by locals, police and animal welfare officials eventually found the large reptile holed up in a small cave.

Thought to be a pet let loose in the area by its former owner, the crocodile was subdued and sent for safe keeping to the Bali Zoo.

Unfortunately, the animal died on Saturday, January 18, 2014, one day after its arrival at the Zoo.

An autopsy performed at The Bali Zoo found that the crocodile had suffered a bullet head wound near its eye which, together with the severe stress occasioned by its capture, precipitated the reptile's death.

The source of the bullet wound remains a mystery.

The dead reptile was determined to be an estuarine crocodile estimated to be 4-5 years of age.
