Mysterious East Bali Stone Monuments Celebrate Male and Female Sexuality

(1/26/2014) Two large stones that have sudenly appeared near the surf of at Pantai Ujung at the village of Tumbu in Bali's regency of Karangasem - said to resemble Lingga and Yoni ( respectivley the male and female reproductive organs) - are making headlines in the Bali press.

The large stone objects have been removed from the beach and installed on another location of the beach normally reserved for melasti ceremonies.

Villagers have long been aware of the "pair" of matching stone symbols revealed by shifting sands. When a beach preservation project got underway members of the community approached a contractor undertaking the reclamation to assist in the relocation of the massive stones.

Now standing in its new location on Ujung Beach, local villagers are according the stones sacred status by draping the megaliths in symbolic cloths and surrounding them with traditional offerings. Villagers see the appearance of the stones as a positive sign for Kerahayuan Jagat - the safeguarding of the natural environment.

Speculations continues in some quarters as to whether the uniquely shaped stones are the product of a natural process or, if at some point in the distant past, were crafted by human hands.
