Garuda Eager to Grow it China Travel Market

(5/12/2014) Speaking at the launch of Garuda Indonesia Discovery Our Journey to Excellence Program on Friday, May 9, 2014 in Jakarta, Emirsyah Satar, the Airline’s CEO affirmed his company’s desire to expand flight services to the Chinese mainland as a means of growing foreign arrivals totals.

Quoted by Bisnis.com, Satar said: “The potential of developing tourists numbers from China is very great. We are convinced that we can capture this market.”

Garuda is reportedly in discussions with the Ministry of Tourism and the Creative Economy on steps to increase the number of Mainland Chinese visitors from 800,000 in 2013 to 1 million in 2014.

Currently, Garuda serves the Shanghai-Jakarta, Beijing-Jakarta and Guangzhou-Jakarta routes on a daily basis. The Indonesian flag carriers operates Boeing 737-800, Airbus 330-200 and Airbus 330-300 on it China schedules.

At the same ceremony, Garuda’s vice-president for China, I Wayan Subagia, announced that in order to boost the number of Chinese visitors to Indonesia new China routes would soon be announced.

Garuda is in the process of completing market surveys to open services to Chengdu and Zhonggi.

Subagia said: “The Chinese market has great potential. From year to year our Chinese passengers to Indonesia grow 10% and our flights to China run an average occupancy of 71%. This year we expect occupancy to average 74%.”

Wayan said Garuda was also assisting the Government in trying to attract Chinese investment in tourism projects in Bali, Borobudur, Lombok, Labuhan Bajo and Menado.
