17 Years Instead of a Bullet

49-Year-Old French Man Hears Prosecutors Call for 17 Year in Prison for Smuggling Methamphetamines into Bali

(6/15/2014) As reported by the Jakarta Globe, State Prosecutors have asked for 17 years in prison for Francois Jacques Giuily, a 49-year-old Frenchman charged with smuggling three kilograms of methamphetamines on January 19, 2014.

Prosecutors, who could have sought the death penalty against the man, told the court Giuily had tried to undermine the Governments anti-narcotics program and the nation’s image as a tourist destination.

Prosecutors also are asking the Frenchman be fined Rp. 10 billion (US$846,000) or, alternatively, spend another three months in jail.

The drugs being smuggled into Bali were found in Giuily’s suitcase after he disembarked a Malaysia Airline flight on a trip that originated in Abu Dhabi on January 19, 2014.

Bali Custom’s officials put the street value of the drugs confiscated from the man at Rp. 6.1 billion.

Giuily is pleading before that court that he only acted as a courier and was offered US$4,000 by a Gambian man to bring the drugs to Bali.

Earlier this year another Frenchman, Thierry Verchere was arrested when a quantity of cocaine was found in his rented North Kuta residence.
