Stop the Press

Drug Smuggler Posing as a Reporter Arrested at Baliís Ngurah Rai Airport

(7/27/2014) The Customs and Excise office at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport have prevented the smuggling of 507 grams of methamphetamines from Kuala Lumpur, carried by a man posing as a journalist.

The head of the Ngurah Rai Customs office, Budi Harjanto, told the State News Agency Antara, “We succeeded in thwarting an effort to smuggle narcotics in which the smuggler used conventional methods.”

Officials arrested a man named Suyoto (55) who claimed he was a reporter for a publication named “Target.” Moments before his arrests, Suyoto landed on an AirAsia flight AK376 from Kuala Lumpur at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, July 22, 2014.

Custom officials became suspicious when the man’s luggage underwent x-ray examination. Subsequent checks uncovered two packages of crystal methamphetamines concealed in the lining of the luggage.

A test of the substance confirmed the items as narcotics in the form of methamphetamines weighing 507 grams.

Suyoto carried three different identity card (KTP) form Singkawang, East Kalimantan; and Blitar and Surabaya, both in East Java.

The man tried to persuade customs officials that his status as a member of the press should preclude his arrest. It didn’t and Suyoto is now in custody, facing a maximum of 20 years in prison.
