Local Teens Drown in Northeast Bali

3 Balinese Boys at Tulamben Die During Jukung Outing

(7/25/2014) Three of seven teenagers drowned while sailing in a local fishing boat near Tulamben, northeast Bali on Thursday, July 24, 2014.

The remaining four teens manage to survive by swimming to shore after a large wave overturned their “jukung” some 50 meters from the shoreline.

The boys were all from the nearby village of Tulamben and had decided to make an outing to the sea in the sail-driven vessel.

Metrobali.com reports the seven set sail at 4:30 pm paddling the boat out into open water. However, a short distance from shore the boat flipped when hit by a large wave, sending the seven young men into the water.

Four of the boys - I Nengah Sudarma,(18), Paing (14),  Kadek Adi(15) and I Gede Botak,(14) managed to safely swim the 50 meters to shore. Unfortunately, three boys -I Gede Wawan Antara (17) of banjar Beluhu Kangin, I Wayan Junaka Adi from Panti and I Kadek Golo,(17) from banjar Tengah Panti were unable to swim and disappeared beneath he waves.

The four boys who made it to shore sought the help of local residents and a diver who set sail, only to recover the lifeless bodies at a depth of 5 meters.

A member of the Bali Water Police in Karangasem, I Made Wartama, confirmed the death of the three young men. Wartama said the weather was poor at the time of the accident, with many local fishermen unprepared to set sail due to high wave conditions.
