To Strike or Not to Strike

Garuda's Pilots Call Off Strike Threat Again.

(2/11/2003) Garuda Indonesia's pilots have again called off a planned strike at the 11th hour.

The pilot's association representing the flight deck crews of the national carrier have repeatedly gone to the wire promising to ground their airplanes only to withdraw their threat at the last moment. Similarly, the pilots were scheduled to start their strike on Tuesday, February 11, 2003, only to cancel strike plans the night before the promised shutdown.

The latest pull back from the brink of a strike occurred following meetings between the pilots association and Indonesia's Minster for State Enterprises, Laksamana Sukardi. Minister Sukardi reportedly involved himself in talks when meetings on Monday between the pilots and the Minister of Manpower and Transmigration, Jacob Nuwa Wea, failed to dissuade the pilots from their strike plans.

Meanwhile, the airline's management and pilots seem to be miles apart in dealing with wage issues with the pilots seeking increases of between 400-500%.

Management raised the temperature on ongoing talks in the final days before the latest strike deadline by involving police in plans to protect aircraft and airline equipment should the strike eventuate.
